From Discovery to Cure: Understanding the Complex Path of (Antiherpetic) Drug Development.

Have you ever wondered why it takes so long to get a new antiviral to the people who need it? Do you ever wonder why so many "promising" new (or repurposed) drugs are discussed in the news, social media, and even scientific papers but then "disappear" and don't reach the clinics? This presentation in the Herpes Cure Advocacy program will attempt to demystify the long process of antiviral drug discovery and development, highlighting the many challenges and barriers that must be overcome for a drug to reach the people who need them. The talk will also highlight the many ongoing efforts to develop new antiherpetic antivirals, briefly discussing their current status and what we may expect to learn about these programs in the coming years.
