This historic #Walbotale Pothgul Rajamaha Vihara, located at a distance of 4 km from #Mirigama on the #Giriulla road from Mirigama, near #Kandalam junction, was built during the reign of King #Gotabhaya II. King Gotabhaya, who was distraught by the death of King #Sirisaghabo, is considered one of the temples built all over the country. Old coins, bead bricks and pottery remains from the royal eras of Queen #Lilavati, #Sahassamalla, #Wodaganga, #Dharmashoka, #Bhuvanekabahu etc. testify that this temple was at a very advanced level during the #Polonnaru period as well. It is said in the history that this temple was restored by King #Parakramabahu II during the #Dambadeni era and the monks were engaged in book editing. This temple was converted into a Pothgul temple with a two storied edifice by King Parakramabahu II. Also, King Narendrasingha made a twelve cubit high Vishnu statue on the upper floor of this building and placed a bronze Vishnu footstool. AD History says that in 1753 King Keerthi Sri Rajasingha of Kandy built a Tampita temple near the ancient Bodhi tree, but it has since been destroyed. The present temple was renovated in 1870 and completed in 1900. The granite pulpit has been restored as an archaeological protected monument. The ancient bodhisattva, which is spread over the bushes, is protected by three granite ramparts and a golden fence.
