European Championships - Greco-Roman Wrestling - 74kg (Finals) 1983, Budapest A. SUPRON (POL) v. F. KOCSIS (HUN) ----------------------------------- Ferenc Kocsis (Greco-Roman wrestler, 74 kg) • Olympic Gold – 1980 (Moscow) • World Gold – 1979 (San Diego) • World Silver – 1978 (Mexico City) • 4× European Gold – 1978 (Oslo), 1979 (Bucharest), 1981 (Gothenburg), 1983 (Budapest) • 12× Hungarian National Champion A key figure of Hungarian wrestling, Kocsis became known as “Csikó” (“the colt”) for his tireless stamina, stubborn will, and fearless, attacking style. Growing up on the rural outskirts of Hungary, he first turned to wrestling after bigger boys beat him up once football games ran past dark, and play often transformed to fight. Summers along the Tisza (river) with his godparents—working with animals, hauling harvest, learning and working at the local butchery—forged the resilience that later defined him on the mat. His explosive throws made him one of the most exciting and unpredictable wrestlers of his era. Kocsis was an active, risk-taking fighter who always pushed for big throws and pins, even from impossible situations. He later mentored a new generation of greats, including Olympic and World Champion Péter Farkas, and Olympic Champion István Majoros. A member of the UWW Hall of Fame, he remains one of Hungary’s most successful wrestlers. -----------------------------------
