If you’ve been off work because of sickness or an injury you may not be able to return to full duties. You may not be able to do your job in exactly the same way as you did before. You may first need your doctor or health professional to agree on what you’re capable of doing. It is important that your employer/manager supports you as you return back to work, as an employees working life may have been altered due to your injury or illness. It gives us a support network. It gives us a sense of identity and purpose, routine and stability. And, if your time away is due to an injury or illness, going back to work is often one of the most important factors in speeding up the return to full health. If you’ve been off because of sickness or an injury you may not be able to return to full duties. You may not be able to do your job in exactly the same way as you did before. You may first need your doctor or health professional to agree on what you’re capable of doing. Make sure you talk with your manager about what you can do and ask for any changes you may need to support your smooth return to work. You don’t need to be 100% recovered to go back, but your manager will need to know if you’ll need any adjustments, such as adapted work equipment, modified or alternative duties, shorter hours, or flexible or part-time working. And, if you are starting on modified or alternative duties or reduced hours, it’s important that your manager informs your colleagues before your return. It’s also a great way of ensuring that you have the support you need. Your employer may also need to review their risk assessments if you’ve been off with a health condition that makes you, or those around you, more vulnerable to workplace risks.
