Owning a camper means always having a project! And today we are tackling a project that many older campers will need done - trying to remove the yellow in aging plastics. While skylights in the rv shower do a great job of providing light and head room, they also allow UV light to damage the plastics. We had a cover on our skylight but it partially fell down when the camper was in storage over the summer last year and by the time we noticed, the yellowing had begun. So we started doing some research on how we could make our shower white again. We knew that the worst case scenario would be having to replace the shower panels but we were looking to try something less expensive and less labor intensive as we had a trip coming up. Then we started looking at maybe painting the shower but we were worried of the fumes and it not drying before our trip. And then we stumbled on this - using a cream peroxide solution that hairdressers use to whiten it back up. A video we watched recommended the Super Star 40V Cream Peroxide Developer and so we bought a bottle of Amazon and proceeded to give it a try. (and you can likely find a similar one at a local salon supply store) And we were amazed how well it worked to get rid of the yellow! It looked new again 48 hours later! As we mention in the video - we applied it twice and let each time set on a warm day for about 24 hours. It was an easy process. Preparing the space took the longest - applying the solution and the plastic over it took less than 15 minutes. But - it is peroxide so follow all safety recommendations on the bottle! We used gloves, safety goggles and made sure we had plenty of ventilation. Many of the videos we watched used UV light and a hairdryer to speed things up. But we found sunlight from the skylight and days in the 80's/90's worked just fine. And while ClingWrap was suggested - we found a box of lightweight painters plastic the easiest to apply. But in watching these other videos and reading the comments, there was one question that kept popping up - how long would it last? We decided to try this process and answer that question for viewers going forward! And while it worked amazingly well - it didn't last as long as we hoped (we were hoping 6 months to a year). At 3 months we can see a light yellow tinge to the plastic again. Not nearly as bad as when we started the process but enough to know we will need to do again. And most likely, we will need to move to our 1st or 2nd option to take this off our list of ongoing maintenance! However, we are glad we did it. It was very easy, inexpensive and allowed us to go on a trip without having to stare at that ugly yellow shower every day! At the end of the video we talk about a product we wish we had found when we first bought the camper - a Camco RV Skylight Insulator. We go over our favorite features of this insulator including one that keeps it from falling down when it is in storage. Would love to hear if you have ever done this project or if you have ever tried painting an rv shower - leave it in the comments! As always - thanks for watching and happy camping!
