It Comes at Night: Fear of the Unknown

And I have to say, I think it's a film that you really need to come to terms with after having seen it. Simply put, you need to let this one simmer for a while. My initial reaction was that it was an effective and really quite upsetting character study, but perhaps not much more than that. Spoilers ahead. It is a film that went in some unanticipated directions, and whether that’s satisfying for you will depend largely on what you expected out of the film. These expectations may or may not have been established based on the way this film was promoted. Indeed, the trailer seems to indicate that this is a horror film, and perhaps the nature of that horror is somehow supernatural or perhaps mythical in nature. Now, if you were unsatisfied on that basis, you’re fully entitled to feel that way. But perhaps I can supply an interpretation that will change the way you look at the film, hopefully for the better.
