In preparing for this week’s message, I was struck by the profound maturity of Mary, a young Israelite girl, likely in her early teens, betrothed to a poor carpenter, whose life was forever altered by the appearance of an angel sent from God to tell her she was going to be the mother of the Son of God. I don’t know about you, but that seems pretty overwhelming. She was certainly troubled and afraid at first, and yet this Sunday I want us to see how, in Luke 1:26–38, her life, theology, and faith serve as a rich example of humble trust and obedience for all of us.
