Lanching riders to speeds of 149 mph (240 km/h) in just 4.9 seconds, this iconic Intamin Hydraulic launch coaster is currently the world's fastest operating roller coaster. Or at least it will be until Falcon's Flight pips it by just 6 mph when it opens later this year at Six Flags Qiddiya in Saudi Arabia. Themed to the legendary Scuderia Ferrari F1 racing team, this ride is much more than just a launch with over 6,800 feet (2000 metres) of track, making it the 3rd longest coaster in the world, just behind the Beast at King's Island and Steel Dragon 2000 at Nagashima Spa Land. The ride launches directly into a set of trim brakes, but remains breathlessly fast over the rest of its layout which includes 6 airtime hills and a succession of giant low to the ground turns. It's certainly not your average launched coaster - it's so fast that riders are required to wear safety goggles! Having been closed for most of 2024 and with other rides of its type - most recently Kindga Ka - facing the chopping block, there was concern that Formula Rossa's days were numbered. However, enthusiasts were relieved when it reopened just before Christmas last year and on the day of my visit it operated all day with no issues.
