Presenter: David Joyce, Owner & Proprietor, David K. Joyce Minerals Presenter info: https://djoyceminerals.com/meet-david... / david-joyce-3b542722 Summary: The Sudbury, Ontario mining area is one of the most mineral-rich places in the world having produced many billions of dollars of metal from interesting and rare minerals. The Structure hosting the mineral deposits is, in fact, a giant comet/meteor impact structure, the third largest astrobleme in the known history of the Earth. This presentation will go through the history of discovery of the valuable mineral deposits, the development of the understanding of the impact structure, resultant geology and the mineralogy of the deposits. Biography: David Joyce has been a mineral collector since he was 12 years old, growing up in rock and mineral bereft Scarborough, Ontario. He left Scarborough at 19 years of age to attend the Haileybury School of Mines and, upon graduation, worked across Canada and the world, in the explosives and mining businesses. He later worked for mining and engineering contractors in the field of designing and building mining complexes and his last corporate position was Vice President, Business Development for SNC-Lavalin Engineers and Constructors. David was an adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto for eight years, is past vice-president of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM), past Chair of the Toronto Branch of CIM, Past President of the Walker Mineralogical Club and a founder of the Young Toronto Mineralogists Club. He has been on the boards of directors for several public and private corporations. David has split his life between Canada and Arizona for many years and his collecting interests reflect this, since he maintains both advanced Arizona and Canadian mineral collections. He is an avid field collector in both regions and a high proportion of both collections are personally collected. David Joyce was a mineral dealer for many years, both part time and full time. He is retired from selling minerals and the business is now managed by his son Daniel D. Joyce through the website www.djoyceminerals.com.
