A conflict in South-east Asia is escalating. Thai and Cambodian forces are clashing along their shared border. The fighting has killed at least twelve civilians. Here’s what we know so far… Thai officials say clashes are ongoing in at least six areas across the frontier. The first erupted near an ancient temple near Thailand’s Surin Province and Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey region. Despite efforts ease tensions, the situation escalated quickly with fighting across multiple disputed stretches of the border. Cambodia has been accused of firing rockets into a Thai village, while Thailand has carried out air strikes on Cambodian military targets. At least twelve Thai's, mostly civilians, have been killed across three Thai provinces. Six of those deaths happened in Sisaket, after shots were fired at a gas station. Both sides say they’re acting in self-defense, each accusing the other of firing the first shot. Thailand has closed the border with Cambodia, telling Thai nations to leave the country. This the second armed confrontation since May, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead. Tensions later flared again when a land mine explosion injured Thai soldiers, prompting Thailand to swiftly shut the border. Clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border are nothing new. The two countries share a frontier stretching more than 800 kilometers, drawn up in 1907 under French colonial rule. Cambodia has been using the map as a reference to claim territory, but Thailand insists the map is flawed. The most violent flashpoints have been around the 1,000-year-old Preah Vihear temple, located here. In 1962, the International Court of Justice awarded the temple to Cambodia, but the ruling didn’t end the dispute. It made things worse. … and over the last fifteen years, deadly skirmishes have continued in the area. #Thailand #Cambodia #Asia Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/ODNsubs TikTok: / ondemandnews Twitter: / odn Facebook: / odn If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: http://www.itnproductions.co.uk/news/
