The New Winter Songbook is a collection of twenty-one songs reflecting contemporary experiences of, and attitudes towards, the winter season from composers spanning a range of experiences and backgrounds. Many, though not all, are settings of secular texts. Whilst more traditional winter themes do recur within the songs – those of cold, loss, stillness, grief and darkness – those of belief, faith, and hope, offer an emotional counterbalance. Each individual composer approaches and explores these themes from their own perspective, lending their voice to a musical tapestry, expressing what it means to reflect upon and celebrate the season of winter today. The songs are to be published by Hal Leonard as an anthology in November 2025. Natural State Music by James Weeks Lyrics by James Weeks Overnight snow still lying in patches on the field, melting under the rain Wind bending the winter tares, glowing dull russet Delivery vans on the road, pushing the slush around The verges are scattered with drivethru litter: Red Bull cans, McDonald's wrappers, vape cartons, crisp packets, water bottles Black binliner snagged on the barbed wire on top of the fence A Stella can caught in a hawthorn bush Sky a thick grey, shrouding roofs and the tops of trees I can only just make out West Cornforth, the quarry, the Amazon warehouse A few cows in a field beyond the trainline, heading for the byre A pheasant pecking in the scrub A red car passes, following phone lines southwards Industry of body against the cold Rough land ploughed through the rubbish of the past Dirt-bike tracks through abandoned coalfields The unkempt scars, planted with saplings Created with generous support from Arts Council England, Hinrichsen Foundation, Francis Routh Trust, Finzi Friends, and The Marchus Trust and numerous individual supporters to whom we are very grateful Recorded at St Paul’s, Knightsbridge, 20-22 May 2025 Soprano: Rebecca Lea Piano: Caroline Jaya-Ratnam Engineer & Mastering: Adaq Khan Producer & Editing: Matthew Bennett Design: Mike Cooter Video: Will Edwards Executive Producer: Adrian Green CR114 © 2025 Convivium Records.
