Today we had the great pleasure of chatting with Juan Carlos Bagnell, a.k.a. SomeGadgetGuy, on meaty topics such as why Juan left Pocketnow, intellectual honesty in reviews, the issue of increasingly expensive smartphones, and much more! Juan points out a major issue: how the tech landscape changes so quickly and safety research often lags 10 years or more behind, leaving early adopters particularly vulnerable to unknown risks How can scientists, the tech community and consumers at large have a conversation about risks without causing panic? Rick talks about his red laser treatments for retinitis pigmentosa that work by stimulating the production of stem cells. Maintaining intellectual honesty & consistency while doing gear reviews. Juan's approach is to acknowledge possible bias & let viewers know right off the bat where he's coming from, rather than to attempt to appear truly objective. Why do many new gear reviews seem to follow an eerily similar format? Are companies paying YouTubers to put out cookie-cutter reviews? Juan believes that the similarity may stem from YouTubers trying to maximize their viewership & reach through SEO optimization and independently arriving at a particular review format. One aspect of this is the fact that getting your video on a given topic up on YouTube as soon as possible to beat out competing videos on the same topic hugely increases your share of the viewership. So, many reviewers often have scant time to really spend using the product before they need to post a review video. Are mobile upgrades released too frequently?
