Rejoice Ministries വചനോത്സവം 202 Day 2 Sermon notes. Part I Bethel; the first turning point in Jacob’s life 3 places Jacob named: Gen 28:19 Bethel Gen 32: 2 Mahanaim Gen 32:30 Peniel First named Bethel then later after 20 yrs again named it Bethel Gen 35:15. Bethel was Jacobs's first turning point in his life, Mahaniem the second- Mahaniem, the 3rd – Peniel. Beth-el means – “House of the Lord”. Beth- house – the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet. See Psalm 119 for a list of all alphabet from aleph to taph. E.g. Beth-lehem – house of bread; beth-saida- house of fish. Literal means the house of God, but... Bethel's spiritual meaning is a divine blessing. Mahanaim – 2 companies, 2 camps. Spiritual meaning- Divine power. Peniel – I have seen the ‘face of God’. Spiritual meaning – Divine fellowship Abraham was known as a man of ‘Tents’. Wherever he went, he put down tents. Heb 11 9 In the hall of faith, A man who dwelt in tents, tabernacles because he sought a better country, knowing he was only a sojourner in the places he passed through. Isaac- ‘man of wells.’ 4 wells dug. Gen 24, 25. Abraham dug a well in Gerar Gen 21:28-35. later buried by Philistines. Later re-dug by Isaac. Both Isaac and Abraham were more powerful, like princes than Abimelech. The 4 wells Isaac excavated –Gerar, Esek (‘strife’), Sitnah (‘allegation’), Rehoboth’ God made room for us. Then yet again another one – Beersheba. These wells originally dug by his father Abraham, now re-excavated by him. The evil one comes against us to cover up our wells, our efforts, and usurp our blessings, but God will not allow them to be covered, He will open them up for us. Israel in the wilderness, God promised to give them water Gen 21:16-18. They sang, rise up O well. This well was dug by former princes (Abraham and Isaac). Whatever we do for God, our ministry - is not going to be in vain. God is not indebted to anyone, it will rise up for future generations. Israel enjoyed free tasty water, not of their efforts. Jacob – ‘Man of Pillars.’ The first pillar- Bethel. Pillar of blessing Gen 28:18,19- First at Luz, later called Bethel. Jacob running away from his brother who swore to kill him. He laid his head to rest at Bethel, on a stone pillow. There he saw a vision, woke up, and made a covenant with God. The pillow becomes a pillar. The painful moments of our life, God can turn it into blessed experiences. Turn a stone pillow into a pillar of blessing. We can call it the pillar of appearance. There God chose Jacob, not the other way round. Jesus said, you did not choose me, but I chose you. Like God chose Moses from the wilderness to rescue His people. 2nd pillar at Gilead: Pillar of separation. Gen 31:44-45. When he was running away from Laban his uncle. Laban pursued him. On the 6th day of pursuit, God appeared to Laban and said, don’t do anything to Jacob – good or bad. 5 days God did not stop him, but the 6th day, one day before Laban would’ve have caught up with Jacob, God stopped Laban's hand. God is always on time, will stop the evil one's hand, hold us back from falling right into his mouth. When Laban meets Jacob, they make a covenant – erected a pillar. The pillar at the mountain of Gilead. You will not cross over to my side nor I to yours. You have no inheritance nothing of mine over on this side. This corresponds to our baptism, where we declare we have nothing of this world with us. The second pillar – the pillar of separation. The third pillar- A pillar of blessing. The second time he went to Bethel. 4th pillar. The pillar of remembrance. Gen 35:19,20. Rachel died in childbirth and in that place was erected another pillar. At Bethlehem –Ephrathah. Even in that moment of pain, his wife dead, a blood-stained newborn son in his hands – Jacob still remembered to erected a pillar to God, as he always did in worship. 1 Sam 10.2 God ordered Samuel to anoint Saul of the tribe of Benjamin. Samuel told Saul, you will see the tomb of Rachel on the way. God will lead us like He led our forefathers, and may we always erect pillars of worship to him at our every turning point.
