Tiny Outdoor Adventures, Watercolor Sky in a Bottle, Middle School Art inspired by Jen Aranyi

In this middle school art lesson, students will create a magical “world in a bottle” featuring their favorite outdoor activity set against a glowing watercolor sunset. We begin by sketching a large bottle or glass container shape and designing a simple outdoor scene inside using strong black line work and silhouettes. Then, students learn how to paint a smooth watercolor wash, blending warm sunset colors like yellow, orange, pink, purple, and blue to create depth and atmosphere. Throughout the process, we focus on using contrast and color to create emphasis, making the dark silhouettes stand out against the vibrant sky. This project combines drawing and painting techniques while encouraging creativity, storytelling, and personal expression.
