Savoldo's mysterious Mary Magdalene stands out from other paintings of her in the National Gallery's collection. It's markedly different, so how can we be sure it is a painting of her? Giovanni Savoldo was an Italian artist from Brescia but is known mostly for works he painted in Venice. He, like other Brescian artists, was interested in the effects of light and shade, of shadow and metallic colours.
