These volunteers race the clock to stop childhood hunger

Nearly one in five children in Ohio face food insecurity, a lingering crisis that local volunteers and advocates are working to combat. At the Children's Hunger Alliance in Columbus, volunteers pack boxes of food with machine-like precision. The supplies are designed to keep children nourished over the weekend, when free and reduced-price school meals are unavailable. Last year, the nonprofit provided more than 10 million meals to over 124,000 children across the state. The situation worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the recovery has been sluggish, said Cindi Marshall, vice president of development for the organization. She noted that recent policy shifts, including the suspension of expanded SNAP benefits last November, have further compounded the issue. "In the state of Ohio, we have approximately a half-million children on an annual basis that do not get enough food to eat," Marshall said. "It's a tough social challenge that we have, and it takes a village. I know that sounds trite, but it's true."
