Cesarean section is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world. It is an operation to deliver a baby via the anterior abdominal wall. Cesarean section is a major abdominal surgery and carries with it a number of risks. It should therefore only be performed when it is deemed the safest option for the woman and baby. Rates of Cesarean section vary greatly depending on country and population. The majority of Cesarean sections are performed under regional anesthesia, meaning the patient is awake during the surgery but does not feel pain. There are implications for women having subsequent babies following a Cesarean section so women should be fully informed of their options during the antenatal period. Indications for this mode of delivery are categorized according to risk to the mother or fetus. This can impact the timing of the delivery. Categories include: Category 1 - Immediate threat to life of the woman or fetus, indicating need for an immediate ‘crash’ section. Category 2 - Maternal or fetal compromise in which the procedure is deemed urgent but life is not in immediate danger. Category 3 - No maternal or fetal compromise but early delivery is needed. Category 4 - There is no maternal or fetal compromise and the delivery can happen at a time that suits both ward and family. Learning Objectives.
