DIY - Afognak Alaska Roosevelt Elk hunting, 2023.

My third time hunting elk on Afognak - and the second time hunting elk with Ben. We had success in 2020 and were hoping to land in the same area. However, recent logging activity made that area a no go. We landed in new and unfamiliar territory. We were able to cut brush for two days to create a route up a nearby mountain. We were blessed with a weather window while camping for two nights under the moon and stars. We also got to enjoy some fine dining after discovering "chicken of the woods" and "hedgehog" mushrooms. Despite ample bear sign, we had zero issues with bears this time. Ultimately, we took a large bull - and had to pack it out over five days. It was a memorable adventure that left us exhausted and thankful. As difficult as it was, it's hard not to want to go back. Total hiking 80+ miles.
