The great Danish singer performs four songs by Franz Schubert. Paul Ulanowsky is the pianist. This record is from 1960 and is the first recording in the U.S. of Schiøtz. It was produced by his friend and fellow artist, Richard Dyer-Bennet. The photo of Schiøtz and Ulanowsky was taken by the celebrated photographer Clemens Kalischer. He provided several photos for Dyer-Bennet Records. I. "Liebesbotschaft", D. 957, no. 1 0:00 II. "Ganymed", D. 544 2:42 III. "Der Wanderer an den Mond", D. 870 6:56 IV. "An die Laute", D. 905 9:15 Link to my Aksel Schiøtz playlist: • Aksel Schiøtz (1906-1975) A few excerpts from reviews when this recording was released in 1960: High Fidelity, March 1961: “We need not fall back on our admiration for his courage and determination, for the essentials of Schiøtz’s art are intact. Even so ambitious a song as “Ganymed” is done to satisfaction because the singer comprehends and projects structure, its musical meaning — and the secret of a gem like “Verschwiegene Liebe” is told with precision. The record’s real treasure is the group of songs by Carl Michael Bellman.” Musical America, January 1961: “Even in baritone range the timbre of a tenor remains. So does the famous Schiøtz flexibility within the phrase. — Flawless diction!” Hi-Fi/Stereo Review, March 1961: “The Schubert is superbly evocative, the Bellman is eighteenth century Swedish idyll and irony, the Wolf delightfully whimsical and the Brahms utterly captivating.”
