About 100 people call this tiny community on the north shore of Quatsino Sound, Vancouver Island home. The village is only accessible by either float plane or by boat and sees relatively few visitors compared to the usual tourist hot spots on the Island. We travelled in and out on the bi-weekly mail-boat from Coal Harbour. This is a much cheaper option than a single journey by water taxi. The village was the base for three seasons of the “Alone” TV franchise. Gwen at the museum will show you a map of the spots along Neroutsos Inlet and Quatsino Sound where the aspiring survivalists were left alone until just one remained. Less well known is that Quatsino was the inspiration for “Caiette” the isolated Vancouver Island village central to Emily St John Mandel’s novels “The Glass Hotel” and “Sea of Tranquility”. We had lots of fun identifying Mandel’s fictional aspects in the modern/real Quatsino.
