One million soviet citizens took part in the partisan movement. Gradually, individual groups managed to synchronize their actions with the General Staff in Moscow. Some of the partisans were the Red Army soldiers, who found themselves behind the enemy lines. Others were officers, who received a special training on covert operations. The partisans fought all over the country, but their most successful operations took place in Belarus. Thick forests helped them create full-scale partisan regiments and divisions. There was even a special term – “Partisan Land” – referring to a large territory out of Nazi control Partisans put a strain on enemy operations, damaged the supply lines. In 1943-1944, they started “the War of the Rails”. It reduced the enemy transportations by 40%. The Nazis retaliated in the cruelest ways killing thousands of civilians. They never took the partisans as prisoners of war.
