History in the Making: Why America Keeps Burning

The first in an occasional series called History in the Making, in which Neil looks at contemporary political situations and considers them in a historical context. The biggest urban uprising in decades is sweeping the United States following the racist police murder of Black American George Floyd. In dozens of cities, Black, Latino, and White youth are fighting side by side in solidarity against a bigoted, brutal, militarised police force. The Killer Cops are neoliberalism's frontline, there to crush resistance to a social order founded on grotesque greed at the top and mounting poverty at the base. The social crisis is now intensifying at terrific speed, with 40 million Americans - one in four - out of work and queues at food banks lasting all day. America's urban uprising is a massive revolt from below of the exploited and oppressed. We stand in solidarity with the resistance.
