Lovely Bop-size set from Premier; one of the transition kits characterised by a crossover of parts, new and superseded. 50s-60s era badges with earlier die cast hoops, face-lift 'Sydney Opera House' flush-braced lugs, older spring loaded FT legs. The 12" and 14" shells are constructed from Finnish Birch with Beech reinforcing rings, bass drum is African Mahogany with Beech re-rings, lending nicely to a pronounced low end, otherwise, usually slightly diminished on 18" diameter bass drums. Finished in a very smart and understated White Duroplastic. Beautiful. This configuration (from the late 60s period of production) played by Alvin Jones and Art Blakey - if ever a more distinguished stable of Modern Jazz endorsers was required... enough said about the pedigree of these sadly underrated drums. In hindsight, I could have tuned the 12" to a higher pitch; in person, it seemed pretty tight; only on hearing the finished mix, I think another quarter turn all round in the top head would have really given it that 'Joe-Morello-Take-5' sound I was going for. Otherwise, I think the floor tom sounds spectacular. Even after full restoration, I refitted the old (and worn) Everplay head as it just sounded so right on this drum. Bass drum is probably a little too damped to be considered an authentic Modern or West Coast/Cool Jazz sound; these drummers usually preferring a very open sound. This is a contemporary song after all - it's about the right sound for the track as well as respecting the drummer's art, striking a balance to get the right overall feel. on the topic of feel - I am (unfortunately) no modern jazz expert! I've admired this style my whole life. Here, I demonstrate a working knowledge which I deploy to assimilate the overall sound; I know that in the right hands (no doubt with a spread of priceless old Turkish K's) this kit would come into its own. For now, you'll have to contend with my efforts and a new track from artist Non-Verbal Reasoning, my own self penned composition, "Waltzing", which, for those interested in my musical compositions as well aw my drums, is a song I started writing 25 years ago and only completed the summer of 2022!!! Footnote: I very nearly neglected to acknowledge the cymbal set up. My go-to 17" 1990s Zildjian Paper Thin which seems to make it onto 9/10 recordings these days, such is its closeness to 'perfection' (...whatever that means...). An 18" Zildjian 'BIG' stamp from the early 50s, but the star of the show has to be the 20" Super Zyn Ride, quite 'clangy' in person, none of this seems to transfer when recorded, just a lovely, semi complex, semi dry jazz sound, supported by an ideally matched pair of 13" Super Zyn hats, buttery, but with a pleasing chip sound that requires no eq-ing in post. enjoy. Track: Waltzing by Non-Verbal Reasoning (c) Intermission Records 2022.
