(26 Aug 2021) Hundreds of Afghan evacuees were brought to South Korea on Thursday aboard a military plane as part of international efforts to airlift people out of their war-ravaged homeland following the Taliban's takeover. Seoul's Foreign Ministry said the aerial tanker carrying 378 Afghan evacuees landed at Incheon International Airport, just west of Seoul. They are either those who had worked for South Korean-run facilities in Afghanistan including its embassy, or their family members. South Korea airlifted them from Kabul to Islamabad earlier this week before bringing them to South Korea. The Afghans, more than half of them are underage children, are to be sent to a temporary housing center in southern South Korea. The Justice Ministry said it'll grant residential status to the evacuees and push for legislation to issue a visa status enabling them to work in South Korea later. From 2002-2007, South Korea sent army medics and engineers to Afghanistan to help rebuild the country at Washington's request. Even after ending its military deployment, South Korea had still run a hospital, a job training center and other facilities in Afghanistan to support the country's reconstruction.
