Unfortunately, injuries are far more common for athletes and adults alike than we care to admit. However, proper strength and conditioning training has been proven to reduce the risk of injury. The landing mechanics taught in this video are especially important for young athletes, as many injuries result from improper compensation from activation of the wrong muscle groups upon landing. Two common mistakes we see in our athletes are shifting too much weight forward into the heels and stomping on the landing, adding a lot of stress to the joints. We work to teach athletes a soft, solid landing in which the weight is sat back into the heels. Depth drops are a great tool to teach proper mechanics. The athlete stands on a box and then simply steps off and catches their body in the appropriate position. Many athletes will shift their weight too far over the toes, putting unwanted stress on the knees. Another great drill is bounding in the linear, diagonal, and lateral directions. Many young athletes will lean too far forward over the toes, resulting in a small hop and an unstable landing. This unstable landing is where injuries could occur during play. Deceleration is another important lesson that many athletes never learn. The ability to decelerate safely is not only important for the athlete, but also important for those around them. Proper deceleration should involve the posterior chain and sitting the weight back into the heels to slow down.
