This 3D animation shows how groundwater contamination spreads throughout a community. Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) levels in water are shown with a contamination map graphic. The science is explained with animations which show how MTBE bonds with water molecules leading to contamination in individual groundwater wells. Toxic vapor volatilizes from oil in the water table and permeates the soil leading to the toxic vapor seeping into homes through cracks in basements.
