I had two mule palms both lose their spear this winter. It started with the center fronds turning yellow and eventually, both plants lost their spears. I think they picked up a fungus after I moved them under the big cedar tree and they had a bunch of cedar needles drop into the crown area. First priority is to get them out of the rain. This can be a garage or covered patio. I have a covered patio in the back and put them out there. Having cover allows for the spear area to dry out and stop the fungus from spreading more. I used hydrogen peroxide, treating the plant every week for six weeks. I went through a 32oz bottle of peroxide in the six weeks. I also sprayed both trees completely with copper fungicide twice during the six weeks. After two months and warmer weather, I noticed some new growth coming out of the center of one of the palms. A week later and there's an inch of green growth out of one and the other is showing new growth as well. This is the second time I've been able to successfully treat spear pull with hydrogen peroxide, the first time being with two windmill palms that I left out for the winter when they were little. #palmtrees #coldhardy #gardening
