On December 8th, 1941, only hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the second world war reached the Marianas when Saipan-based, Imperial Japanese Navy planes began bombing and strafing American Navy targets on Guam, the largest island in the Marianas chain. Two days later, Japanese troops landed on the island leading to the first engagement between Japanese and US Marine troops of the war known as the first battle of Guam.
