What happened to SSTwo Mall in SS2, Petaling Jaya? Opened in 2010 with an estimated development cost of RM180 million, SSTwo Mall was meant to become a vibrant neighbourhood shopping destination in one of the busiest areas in Petaling Jaya. But within just a few years, the mall struggled with low foot traffic, strong competition from nearby malls like 1 Utama Shopping Centre and Paradigm Mall, and changing consumer behaviour in SS2 — where street food culture dominates. By 2015, the mall had accumulated nearly RM190 million in losses and was forced to shut down. In 2018, the property was acquired by DK Group, with plans to transform it into a medical and healthcare hub known as LifeCare DK Mall. However, the redevelopment never materialised, leaving the building largely vacant until today. In this video, we explore: The original vision behind SSTwo Mall Why it failed despite a prime location The financial losses behind the project The failed medical centre transformation What this tells us about urban development in Malaysia SSTwo Mall is more than just an abandoned building — it’s a case study of how even a “perfect location” can fail.
