HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) - On top of the first announced death in the county, Butler County’s health commissioner says the area must change its behavior immediately or the number of people who get sick could overwhelm the county’s health care resources. Health Commissioner Jennifer Bailer showed how the county is on a track to go well into the surge area once the peak number of cases start popping up. “We’re getting to the point where things are going to get worse. The state is predicting that from mid-April to mid-May, we will be in the peak,” Bailer said. Butler County’s first person to die from the virus was an 86-year-old man from Hamilton. Officials didn’t release any details other than he lived alone and died on Sunday. The commissioner showed everyone how Butler County is already above where it needs to be when it comes to the curves we’ve been seeing so often. “If there are sick people and they’re having trouble breathing, they’re going to need to go to a health care facility and at some point. If we continue on into this yellow line, we will have more people needing spaces in hospitals than there will be spaces for them,” Bailer said. Bailer also discussed Solid Rock Church in Monroe and its decision to continue to hold services for hundreds of members. “We have been in conversation with them and have asked them not to have large group gatherings. We wish that [they] wouldn’t do that. It really goes against the spirit of the rules that the governor sent down to say please distance yourself,” Bailer said. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones also has a message for any would-be criminals. He says they have plenty of room at the jail, and if you break in somewhere, the person may be home and you might end up being the one needing help.
