Extreme "scenic route" detour at East 180th Street due to massive construction. I usually ride the 2 line through here. Then one day I saw what looked like an out-of service train passing through the yard. I saw TA workers with vests inside. Then I noticed that there were passengers on board. The train was taking the one lay-up track that passes completely through Unionport Yard and re-joins the Dyre Line next to the flyover track. A few days later, I went to the end of the uptown local platform and saw this detour track, installed to bypass construction on the uptown local near the old tower. The switch leading into the double-slip switch on the 'M' track is being replaced with a double crossover. Number 5 trains have to snake their way through the detour, stopping for two grade crossings, and squeezing through the middle of the yard in order to reach the Dyre Ave line. So I had to video this once-in-a-lifetime re-route through non-revenue trackage, if only for posterity (and future subway geeks to gawk at) The loud whistling whoosh you hear is the air-conditioner blower. Unfortunately it was right overhead where I was standing. Shot with a Canon PowerShot SX-100IS
