ISQOLS Webinar, "Beyond Happy - How to rethink happiness and find fulfilment" Presenter, Mark Fabian, 2025 ISQOLS Young Scholar Award Recipient Discover why chasing happiness keeps us stuck—and how to build a life that actually feels good, meaningful, and shared with others. In this ISQOLS webinar, Mark Fabian (2025 ISQOLS Young Scholar Award Recipient, University of Warwick) presents key ideas from his new book “Beyond Happy: How to Rethink Happiness and Find Fulfilment” for a broad audience of researchers, practitioners, and anyone curious about the good life. Drawing on wellbeing science, philosophy, public policy, positive psychology, existentialism, and folk wisdom, Mark explains why evolution has wired us for a “happiness treadmill” and how we can make the treadmill a place we want to be—individually and together. --- You’ll learn: Why hedonic adaptation keeps happiness just out of reach—and what it means to “love the hedonic treadmill” instead of trying to escape it How to move from self-optimization to self-actualization, using your emotions as data about your values and direction The role of intrinsic motivation, values, and integrity in building a fulfilling and “authentic” life How mindfulness, gratitude, and emotional intelligence help you listen to your feelings without being ruled by them Why wellbeing is not just individual—and how relationships, care, social capital, and “karmic communities” support human flourishing A practical way out of nihilism: developing a moral compass, living your values, and finding meaning beyond materialism What metamodernism is and how a new cultural mode—beyond postmodern irony—can support sincerity, solidarity, and shared purpose --- About the speaker – Mark Fabian Mark Fabian is Reader in Public Policy at the University of Warwick and an affiliate fellow at the Bennett School for Public Policy at the University of Cambridge. He works on wellbeing from an interdisciplinary perspective, especially in relation to public policy. His work has appeared in leading journals including: Perspectives on Psychological Science Journal of European Public Policy Fiscal Studies Philosophical Psychology His academic book “A Theory of Subjective Wellbeing” was published by Oxford University Press in their philosophy, politics, and economics series.
