Birding Philippines 2 is the second of our three vidceo series from our trip to the Philippines in January and February 2024. "TITLE BIRD" is the Oriental Dwarf-Kingfisher (07:32). This tiny bright kingfisher was photographed on the island of Palawan. Keep in mind it's only 14 cm or 5.5 inches long. We were so fortunate to get these shots. "COVER BIRD" is this Palawan Bulbul (21:14). It's one of the many endemics that we added to our Life Lists from this trip. See it here pretty as a picture. MOST PHOTOGENIC in order of appearance: Rufous-crowned Bee-eater (01:56) White-breasted Woodswallow—begins at (09:07), but check out the bird at (09:31) in particular. Palawan Bulbul (21:14) is also our "COVER BIRD." HONORABLE MENTION for MOST PHOTOGENIC goes to the Philippine Falconet (05:48). LOOKS LIKE ITS NAME—The Whiskered Treeswift (06:33) is definitely sporting facial hair! AERODYNAMICALLY SPEAKING this Eurasian Barnswallow (20:20) looks like it could be a rocket! PSST...YOU LOOK THAT WAY. "I'll CHECK OVER THERE TO SEE IF THE COAST IS CLEAR is our interpretation of what may be occurring between this pair of Rufous-crowed Bee-eaters (02:27). THE EYES HAVE IT! This Luzon Boobook (03:31) has eyes that seem disproportionate when compared to it's head! We seemed to have startled this Palawan (Melodious) Babbler (16:44). It may be yelling at us at (16:51). RESCUED! This Grey-capped Emerald Dove (13:15) was caught in a greenhouse. I assisted one of our tour leaders (Cindy Beckman) in rescuing it. We don't know how long it was stuck in there before we arrived. So glad we could free it. There seemed to be an EGRET CONVENTION on the island of Palawan! Chinese, Intermediate (16:28) and Eastern Great Egrets (17:22) arrived at the same time as we did! LOCALS: Philippine Fairy-bluebird (00:21), Luzon Hornbills (02:58), Luzon Boobook (03:31), Philippine Falconet (05:48), Luzon Flameback (07:56), Philippine Hanging Parrot (09:54), Mindanao Hornbill (11:51), Philippine Trogon (12:23), Philippine Coucal (14:36), Palawan (Melodious) Babbler (16:36), Palawan Sooty Drongo (19:26), Palawan Bulbul (21:14) PARROTS—Green Racquet-tail Parrot (03:23), Blue-naped Parrot (08:37), and Philippine Hanging Parrot (09:54) HORNBILLS— Luzon (02:58) and Mindanao (11:51) SUNBIRDS—Garden Sunbird (Aurora) (10:09), Garden Sunbird (Jugularis) (10:40), Lovely Sunbird (20:50) RAPTORS—Brahminy Kite (02:42), Rufous-bellied Eagle (03:40), Philippine Falconet (05:48) and Changeable Hawk-eagle (17:14) NJB (NOT JUST BIRDS): Leopard Lacewing Butterfly (00:36) Christmas Fern (04:53) Emperor's Candlesticks (05:38) Green Skimmer (09:46) Long-tailed Macaque (13:55) Monitor Lizard (15:32) Many-lined Sun Skink (16:20) Beautiful Demoiselle (18:10) Blue Crabs (18:53) Colugo (19:55) Dark-based Gliding Hawk Moth (21:06) LAST BUT NOT LEAST BIRD is another Babbler. This one is an Ashy-headed Babbler (21:52). Photographed on the island of Luzon. Special Thanks to Cindy and Jim Beckman of Cheepers! Birding on a Budget for organizing such a great tour! The Beckman's have a well-earned stellar reputation. Our first guided birding tour (Panama) was with them. We appreciate their expertise, humor and patience. We're grateful we were able to share this adventure with them. The other members of our tour group were also helpful and kind. Ground transportation for the group portion of the tour was provided by excellent and courteous drivers from Annset Holidays. We highly recommend the guide services of Bram Dememeulemeester. We hired Bram to take us to some locations prior to our Cheepers tour. He and his wife Kathleen took wonderful care of us. Find him on Facebook.
