The amateur radio was started in late nineteenth century. However professional telegraphers used to call the amateurs 'HAM'. The term 'HAM' was used to denote their unskilled approach of using the wireless technology. During the World War II,the amateur radio operators was asked to surrender their license and even dismantle their set up. In India, Amarendra Chandra Guptu was the first man to get the license of amateur radio. HAM Radio became a part of Indian Independence Movement in 1940s. Noriman Printer established Azad Hind Radio.After Independence the number of HAM Radio operators gradually rises in India.HAM Radio operators are particularly crucial in disaster management sector or in mobile shadow zones where the regular mobile network doesn't work.Administration even set up Polling booth in mobile shadow zone during election. Ambarish Nag Biswas, Secretary of West Bengal Radio Club and his team has been serving in the field of HAM Radio since long time.They have been playing a crucial part during natural calamity like Cyclone when every other mode of communication disrupts.
