Dr. Aniketh Venkataram speaks about one of his favourite cosmetic surgical procedures, rhinoplasty. He also mentions the fact that patients often ask him about what a natural looking result of the rhinoplasty procedure is and how he handles such queries. In this video, Dr. Aniketh explains the nuances of the rhinoplasty and the results that can be expected by patients. Apart from this procedure being his favourite, it is also one of the most difficult cosmetic surgical procedures. There are two reasons for this. The nose is quite a small area and a surgical procedure needs to be done with greater precision. The nose helps us in breathing and care needs to be taken to see to it that the surgical procedure should not affect breathing in any way. The second reason as to why this procedure is difficult is because there is very little room for error. Surgical procedures such as breast augmentation or a tummy tuck, may vary by one or two centimetres, however, this is not evident as in the case of the nose. Even a millimetre of difference will be visible, as the nose is at the center of the face, and hence, there is very little or no room for error. One of the main reasons for people opting for a rhinoplasty surgery is so that their nose is not the topic of the conversation, as the job of the nose is to remain unobtrusive, according to Dr. Aniketh. All these reasons add to make rhinoplasty a fascinating and difficult procedure. The next facet of rhinoplasty as explained by Dr. Aniketh, is when patients ask him about what is the natural result after this procedure. A major factor in the results of a procedure is that the nose should look like it is naturally a part of the face, and it should not look like there was surgery done to modify its structure in any manner. Dr. Aniketh then mentions details about what an unnatural nose is, just to bring about a contrast when talking about a natural looking nose. He states that an unnatural nose is one that sticks out, and prominent, and that people can see. If people can make out that you have had a rhinoplasty done, then that is known as an unnatural nose. A few examples of unnatural looking noses are a chubby face with a thin nose, or a well-built person’s face with a small and pinched nose. Even in a person with a nose that is extremely augmented, especially because there is an implant that makes the nose looks prominent. The next question Dr. Aniketh poses is, ‘How do we get a natural looking nose?’ Before stepping into explaining the answer to this question, he first states that in cosmetic surgery there is a spectrum of results. The result can be ‘underdone’, done ‘just right’ or it could be ‘overdone’. Even though the ‘just right’ result is the aim, in case the result is ‘underdone’ then it may not look like a person has got rhinoplasty done. However, an ‘overdone’ result, also called a ‘botched’ result is when too much is done during the procedure. In short, if the result is ‘underdone’ more can be done to alter the results. But if it is ‘overdone’ or ‘botched’ then it becomes a challenge to rectify.
