David Kim (University of San Francisco):Xenophobia, Xenophilia, and Anti-Asian Racism

Over the last 20 years, philosophers have offered increasingly more sophisticated accounts of the nature and wrongness of racism. But almost none of this literature discusses what is distinctive to anti-Asian racism. Arguably, this gap exists in large part because civic narratives of racism tend to center anti-Black racism, and this framing has shaped philosophical analysis of racism in ways that leave anti-Asian racism undertheorized. Kim discusses xenophobia as a form of civic ostracism and its distinctive effects in anti-Asian racism. In doing so, he offers a sympathetic critique of the work of Claire Jean Kim on civic ostracism and what she calls “racial triangulation.”
