Originally streamed Jun 23, 2023. Rebuilding Lurelin Villiage, and visiting Tarrey Town for the first time. I have to admit, I was not super excited for the new Zelda, despite having really liked Breath of the Wild. This just looked like more of the same, and having basically done 100% of BotW's content (except Korok seeds) I wasn't really excited for more of the same. Well, I was wrong, this game is not only extremely good, it justifies it's existence very well. This game seems to somewhat take into account people's complaints with the first game... though thankfully breakable weapons are still here. Although predictable, I think it's a shame that so many people seemed to not realize how integral the breakable weapon system was to BotW's fun, and this game keeps that basic system, but the new system of fusing together various weapons adds a new wrinkle to that system that is quite welcome and extremely well done. What is even better is this game's system of building; I will not mince words, Nintendo achieved something incredible with this system. It's an incredibly robust and deep system of being able to graft various things together to build all kinds of things, quite amazing in how polished it is, and it's absolutely a perfect marriage with this game's open world. Now, it does have some minor flaws: there are certain bread and butter builds that are easy to make and can trivialize many sections of the game, and you really don't need to engage with a lot of the things you can do... while it's true that many puzzles can be trivialized a bit too easy, I think the system is still overall a net positive in just how fun it is to engage with in the first place. To be honest, I really don't agree with much of any of the criticisms of either of these games, except one: the soundtrack. It has it's moments, particular the village theme songs, many of which are excellent. But on the whole, it's lacking memorable music and is just a bit too bland and backgroundy, and that goes for both games. It definitely could've been a lot better, although it is still not bad. Otherwise, what you have here is one of the best open world games. Keep in mind that is coming from someone who finds 99% of them to be totally unappealing, but this game and it's structure just works. I also quite liked the addition of the sky and underground areas to this game, even if they can be a little half baked, they are still very cool. People complain that these areas are a little too content bare, but honestly I thought it was more than fine the way it is, with just the basic activity of going around and lighting up areas of the map feeling so rewarding and fun. Another typical complaint about these games is the dungeons, and I agree they can be underwhelming for sure, but they tend to be made up for by various shrines and other content which is fun to explore. In this game, although the dungeons ARE quite bland, the lead up to them can make up for it. This is an overall excellent game that really comes together well. It doesn't really "solve" any problems that the first game had, but there wasn't a lot that needed fixing anyway, and the new things it adds are surprisingly distinct and robust, and extremely cool. It makes this game well worth playing, even if you overdosed on the first game like I did.
