First attempt at growing shiitake mushrooms. I opened up the container one day thinking to give it fresh air and then day after this mold was all over. Should have keep the lid on it and cleaned out the new ventilation system I built with bleach before sending fresh air through it into the container holding the shiitake mushroom bulk substrate. The video shows grey/green mold that spread over the top layer of the bulk substrate comprised of hydrated hard wood pellets, straw, rice bran, gypsum, pasteurized at 15 psi for 1.5 hours in a pressure cooker. I believe the contaminate came from the dryer vent I purchased from the local hardware store which I failed to properly sterilize, but who knows... The grey mold over took the top layer of substrate in 3 days and on the first day it formed a web like circle, and spread out from there. This was a first attempt at growing shiitake mushrooms. Second attempt is already in the bulk substrate stage which I in a bag this time an not a monotube. Video also includes microscopic views up to 1000 time magnification of the grey/green mold and a contaminated shiitake mycelium vein. If anyone was wondering what cobweb mold looks like I think this is it, but please correct me if I am wrong. Any input would help too as I am new to growing culinary mushrooms. Thanks and enjoy!
