Moses Barrow Resigns, Clears Path for Tracy Panton's Leadership in Belize

Tracy Panton’s major hurdle towards the UDP leadership was removed last night when Moses "Shyne" Barrow resigned after being advised by the former Chairman, Michael Peyrefitte.  Barrow’s resignation comes after losing the Mesopotamia constituency to Lee Mark Chang in last week’s elections. In his resignation letter, addressed to Peyrefitte, Barrow expressed hope of handing over that power to Hugo Patt. He stated that Hugo Patt would serve as Interim Leader of the UDP until the next National Convention. Barrow had initially stated he would have held onto the leadership position until a national convention was held to elect a new leader. Recently, however, Patt spoke out against Barrow’s decision and expressed support for Tracy Teager Panton, the new Leader of the Opposition. At today’s meeting, Patt spoke about his decision and why he felt it was important to rally behind Panton.  Barrow's tenure as UDP leader has been marked by internal party challenges and efforts to unify the party base. He had spent several months in court battling Panton over leadership of the party after a Panton-led faction had sought to oust him. The matter, which remains before the courts, led to a split in the party, resulting in both Barrow and Panton fielding candidates in the elections. In early February, Panton’s faction sought mediation and when that failed, it placed Lee Mark Chang as a candidate in Mesopotamia to unseat Barrow.
