Communication frequently becomes more challenging as Parkinson’s progresses. Vocal tremor and a softened, hoarse or breathy voice can cause difficulty for others to hear and understand your words. Facial masking can further make it difficult to convey the thoughts and feelings behind those words to others. In addition to being frustrating, impaired communication can negatively impact relationships, increase isolation and lead to depression. During our May webinar, Speech-Language Pathologist and Get LOUD! Stay LOUD! founder Sarah Awde discussed why and how the voice is affected by Parkinson’s, and direct and indirect therapeutic approaches to help improve voice and the ability to communicate, including speech therapy, apps and assistive devices. They were also joined by Irene Doyle who shared the steps she’s taken to manage changes to her voice due to Parkinson’s.
