In 1995 I spent a couple of months in the Virgin Islands working for FEMA shooting video of the aftermath of Hurricane Marilyn. I had taken this work mostly to get out of Denver. Why is another story but, it’s fair to say, I was a bit depressed at the time and hoped a change of scenery would help. Post hurricane, St Thomas was pretty messed up. There was a curfew. The island’s resources were quite limited and the power was off at a mostly vacant resort near Red Hook where I was put up. I was into jogging at the time and a deserted beach was literally right outside my door. I greeted the sunrise every morning on that beach with a run where this chant began to form in my troubled mind. I imagined other voices joining in and rounds being added as I ran. 140 BPM. Four beats to the measure. Eight steps to a line. Over and over. It became my mantra. I used it to push away my problems and move beyond them for a while. I would lose myself in the primitive beat and the sand and the waves. And things slowly got better… Later I wrote a song. Years later I recorded it. And now, more years later, I’ve edited this video for it.
