Photographer Mark Power reflects on his Open for Business commission and on drawing out the relationship between person, work and material. “I’ve concentrated on tiny details of the process: flash-lit pictures of human effort, concentration and skill made theatrical by the black backgrounds, seen alongside large-format black and white images of the site’s exterior.” Open for Business saw nine of the world’s leading photographers documenting contemporary British manufacturing and was a collaborative project funded by the Arts Council England, through its Strategic Touring programme, and in partnership with UK cultural institutions: National Media Museum; Manchester Museum of Science & Industry; National Railway Museum; London Science Museum; University of South Wales, Newport; Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery; MShed Bristol; and Street Level Photoworks. The result was an ambitious, national touring exhibition that toured to the cultural partner venues throughout 2014 and 2015. The programme also included a comprehensive website, a series of newspapers and a bespoke education programme and François Matarasso and Laura Ismay produced a series of short films as part of the project. Open for Business was commissioned and produced by Multistory who are supported by Sandwell Council and Arts Council England. For more about the project: openforbusiness.uk.com
