The Interrupters special screening at Humber

Following a summer where gun violence was top-of-mind for many Torontonians, Humber's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences will be showing an award-winning documentary designed to spark conversations about that very topic. The Interrupters highlights the efforts of CeaseFire (now called Cure Violence), a crime-prevention program developed by a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and in use in the neighbourhoods on Chicago's South Side. The film follows the efforts of three of CeaseFire's "violence interrupters" -- ex-drug dealers and former gang members among them -- as they try to address the epidemic of violent crime in their communities from a public health perspective, focusing on prevention rather than punishment.
