Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). While Lord Vishnu humbly accepted that Lord Shiva is the Supreme Truth, Lord Brahma was overcome with pride and ego, mocking Shiva and his divine form. Enraged by Brahma’s arrogance, Lord Shiva opened his third eye, and from his forehead emerged a terrifying and radiant form — Kaal Bhairav. With a single strike of his pinky fingernail, Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma’s fifth head, destroying his ego but also attracting the curse of Brahma-hatya (sin of killing a god). To cleanse this sin, Kaal Bhairav wandered across the three worlds, with Brahma’s skull stuck to his hand, followed by the spirit of sin itself. Finally, he arrived in Kashi (Varanasi), the beloved city of Lord Shiva. As soon as he entered its holy borders, the curse vanished, and the skull fell to the ground — the place became known as Kapala Mochan Teerth. Pleased by his devotion and penance, Lord Shiva blessed Kaal Bhairav to become the Kotwal (Guardian Protector) of Kashi. From that moment on, no one can enter Kashi without Kaal Bhairav’s permission.
