This was really hard to share. I share it in the hopes that you can also heal generational wounds with your family. It’s a clip from May of an episode of my show In the Clear called “Healing Collective Male Trauma.” It was recorded with my dad as my guest after we had a breakthrough that most people wish they could have with their parents. A breakthrough that took many years of healing to achieve. A conversation my dad told me he was waiting for his deathbed to tell us. Luckily he got to say it all before that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My dad and I grew together having a very status quo style father/son relationship. This is a traditionalist patriarchal authoritarian style that has been passed down through generations of men. A mindset where the father is at the top of the food chain in the family unit, and uses authoritarianism similar to government styles to assert power. “Do this, or else.” Needless to say, our mindsets clashed at every point in one way or another. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Up until recently, the mass education necessary to break past this global status quo was almost non-existent. The right style of parenting to most people is still authoritarianism. The idea that someone has lifelong authority over your mind and body simply because they created you. “Why?” I would ask. “Because I’m your father” he would reply. They don’t need to make sense for you to listen, because it’s authoritarianism. It’s a command, and you do. I have always loudly disagreed with this idea. And it is one of the reasons my dad and I often clashed. This is literally how the institution of government is structured, so it’s no shock the current system that coercively rules over us also tries to control the narrative on parenting and education. But history and our own personal lives clearly proves how detrimental these ideas are. But I was lucky enough to grow up on the internet and therefore be equipped with a new-age mindset that rejects all forms of authoritarianism. Because the only authority in your life is you. Any authority outside of that is literally an imagination in your mind. Be free.
