Houghton-le-Spring The Jewel in the Crown of the Prince Bishops Filmed in the late 1980s it is packed full of pictures of Houghton-le-Spring as it was in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, contrasted with contemporary (1980s) shots, the film is 25 minutes of pure nostalgia. Can you remember Sunderland Street - now largely demolished - when it was the town's main thoroughfare? Or the Grand and the Colosseum cinemas, the Pillars Public House, and the Lake fairground? Presented in documentary style, the film traces Houghton's development from it's agricultural origins, through its years as a mining town, into the pleasant suburban area we know today.
