Marianna Martines was a contemporary and friend of Mozart who admired her performance and compositional skill. They occasionally played duets together. Her music is rarely performed today which is a great loss and, if Mozart admired it, then it must be special! Martines had a very broad education as a result of an extremely enlightened father, Nicolo, and teacher, Pietro Metastasio. Her compositions, many of which are lost, covered a range of genres but were largely all influenced by the Italian style. The Quarta Messa is the largest of her works and is in the form of a 'Missa solemnis'. Aylesbury Choral Society understands that its performance of this Mass on April 5th 2025 was quite possibly only the third performance ever in the UK. It is accompanied by The Aylesbury Sinfonia (a selection of individual musicians from the London and surrounding areas brought together for the performance) and led by Raffaele Pagano. The soloists are Stephanie Bodsworth (soprano), Maggie Cooper (contralto), Adam Tunnicliffe (tenor) and Oleksii Zasiadko (bass). The performance is directed by Jeff Stewart.
