What is a silent rupture?

When a saline implant ruptures, the implant deflates and the saline (a sterile saltwater solution) is harmlessly absorbed by a woman’s body. This is not the case with a silicone gel implant. When a silicone gel implant ruptures, it can easily go undetected by a woman and her doctor for years, and begin to leak sticky silicone gel into her surrounding tissues. An extensive surgery is required to remove the trapped silicone gel and ruptured implant. It is referred to as a “silent rupture” because only an MRI scan can detect it. This is why the FDA recommends all women with silicone gel implants receive an MRI every two years.
