Located on the banks of the river Tapti, Burhanpur was named after the Sufi saint, Burhan-ud-Din, and came to prominence when it became one of the capitals of the Mughal Kingdom. Back then, it was known as the gateway to southern India because of its strategic location. The city was originally meant to be the site of the Taj Mahal which finally had to be built in Agra due to the lack of marble.
