Music for the Soul #42 – "Deep & Wide” Words & Music: Sydney Cox (1931) Music is the language of the soul, it has a unique and special ability to connect directly to the soul to bring joy, soothe sorrows, relieve stress and stir the emotions. This simple chorus, from "Primary" days, is known literally around the world from its use with children. As children we sang this chorus with gusto and energy as we did the actions, and the verses have been all but forgotten. The reality is that this song was composed to be deeply meditative, and, when the chorus is set in context with the verses, it is a song of gospel exhortation. In this gift of “Music for the Soul” Brian and Graham bring you the melody of this chorus as the composer intended, “Andante con espress”, and, although the melody is only that of the chorus, the words of the verses have been also included in the video for added reflection V1 There's a wondrous fountain, filled with living water, Flowing from the Saviour’s wounded side; There's an invitation to the heavy laden, To this fountain flowing deep and wide. Deep and wide, Deep and wide, There's a fountain flowing deep and wide; Yes, 'tis deep and wide, Deep and wide, There's a fountain flowing deep and wide. V2 Sweet and gracious is the voice that bids us welcome, Cease your weary wand'ring and abide Where the healing waters flow from living fountains, Fountains that are pure, and deep and wide. V3 There is life abundant, gift from God our Father, Source whence ev'ry need shall be supplied; It is offered freely, without price or money, Drink from Heav'nly fountains, deep and wide. The complete song was first published in the U.S.A. Southern Territory War Cry, September, 1931. An arrangement was been subsequently printed by Singspiration, then it was published in Salvationist songs of a Century in 1965, it was then published in the Musical Salvationist in 1970 and Gems for songsters 8 in 1978. Because of the popularity of the chorus being used for children, the verses got lost as most brigades didn't sing it, probably classifying it as a children's song.
